Kindergartners Harvest the Bounty!

A class of kindergartners from Kihei Elementary School enjoyed a harvest party at their school’s edible garden yesterday.

By the time is school is out for the summer over 500 children will have harvested and eaten fresh Veggies, Herbs, and Fruits from the garden!

The Wiki Garden system was initially installed in the School’s garden as a “trial”. Over the last 5 months the Wiki Garden system was compared to traditional in-ground and raised-bed gardening practices. Nio, or “Chef” as the kids call him, explained that the Wikis not only outperformed the traditional methods, but the children gravitated towards the Wikis “the kids can get right up next to what they are growing, it makes it easier to harvest and they can work from both sides of the plants”.

5 months ago an Aloha Victory Garden donation help get the Kihei Elementary School started with the Wiki Garden “Trial”. Since then the School has purchased 30 additional Wiki Garden modules, as the Wikis have proven to be both effective and affordable.

The Wiki Garden Plays Ball!

A true testament that Hawai'i largely sets the example in sustainability for the continental U.S., the NBA's New Jersey Nets are making a big push to promote going green and they're doing so with the help of a local company The Wiki Garden. The Nets chose The Wiki Garden as one of the prizes for their "Greenest Fan" award. The Wiki Garden creator, Alan Joaquin, was thrilled for the opportunity to team up with the NBA and gain worldwide attention for his new invention. "My goal when I started this business was to bring sustainable organic food production to the masses," said Joaquin, "and seeing a Wiki Garden on an NBA court 5,000 miles away gives me hope that I will achieve my goal."

The presentation of The Wiki Garden to the Greenest Fan came with a life-sized cardboard cutout of Joaquin at half court hoisting a Wiki Garden over his head. The prop is reminiscent of NBA players posing with basketballs. Joaquin joked that it's the closest he'll ever come to being a pro basketball player. Another Greenest Fan will be honored and bestowed a Wiki Garden on Friday, April 9 during the Nets vs Bulls game.

Kihei Elementary School's Harvest Parties

Kihei Elementary School's Wiki Garden™
Excerpts from an email sent by Susan Wyche (Garden Designer)

"We still have not planned the planting of the new set of Wikis. Instead, we have found ourselves offering a zillion harvest parties for all the kids (500) that originally planted in the garden. This was unexpected (we could hardly get the teachers to make time in the garden for the kids), but then we held one harvest party, word went out to both kids and teachers, and the next week we had 25 more teachers lined up, wanting to have harvest parties for their classes.
You won't believe the tomato and herb harvest that we've gotten off the Wikis!"

This is pretty classic.. the NBA's Greenest Fan Award ceremony was held center court prior to the Nets vs. Hornets game tonight in New Jersey. They had a full size standup of me holding a Wiki Garden™ above my head right at center court...LOL!
